This application works very well in dark mode. Here is an example from the Sample Demo packaged application. I think dashboard pages profit most from dark mode. But do you program in bright daylight or in darker office light or even at night? In bright daylight light mode would be better suited – because the difference to surrounding light seems to put some stress on your eyes.

Also it depends on the surrounding light. Usually it is recommended if there is lots of text on a screen or if there are graphical elements. Ok dark mode is not perfect for any scenario. You can change it with a small little switch in your user settings. APEX in its newest versions added a dark theme to be used for applications (18.1), but also a dark mode for the development environment (19.2 ea).įirst this is how we are used to the application screen in page builder (light mode)Īnd this is the same page using dark mode If a pattern is so well established, there must be a good reason for it.ĭevelopers should think about that and consider to use dark mode too!ĭon’t let those pesky DBAs get the upper hand! Fight them with their own weapons! There is a reason why so many DBAs still use putty in dark mode (it is possible to change the colors). The typical putty session is a black background with a white font color. Now the DBA had terminals using dark mode for ages. First lets see how dark mode looks in a typical developer environment. I’ll explain that a little bit later and also give some sources for further reading. Here is why I like that and why you should use it too.Ī) it is better for your eyes (not always) – slightly modified by me Įvery developer knows that there is a dark mode. It would be a huge win for Oracle’s public perception in the software engineering world. There are an amazingly high number of Java developers that have moved to a Linux desktop or are planning to AND they also use SQL Developer.

The broken controls are the Table Editor Filter field, Worksheet connection chooser, and windows like the Search or Search and replace feature in the Package Editor loose the little “x” in the top right for closing it, however the ESC keep does the same thing.įixing/Changing these 2 (editable filter drop down list and the connection drop down list) would make the native GTK+ LAF work perfectly. You can force GTKLookAndFeel by modifying the nf and adding the following VM option but there are a couple of controls that don’t work:ĪddVMOption faultlaf=. You’ll need to restart SQL Developer for the changes to take affect. There is no way to ‘preview’ these changes.

Here’s what that looks like on my Windows 7 machine with the default theme. You can bypass the whole theme headache and let SQL Developer attempt to match your Windows (I haven’t tried this on OSX yet) theme. Here is the option you want to play around with in the Preferences Setting to Windows will attempt to match your Windows Theme Look and Feel I also enjoy the general grey background going on versus default ‘Fusion Blue.’ Notice the lack of delineation of the pages and the very light contrast It might be easier to just do some before and after screen captures? According to the docs, the ‘Look and Feel’ allows you to tweak ‘the display colors and shapes of objects like menus and buttons.’

Open the preferences and navigate to the Environment page. I realize that this is a very subjective area, so if you do not like my choice of theme and color, please realize there are a few dozen themes available. If you’re going to spend many hours a day in the database, your tool shouldn’t be causing eye strain. Now once you have the tool operating the way you want, I think it’s time to make it look the way you want as well. In an earlier post I pontificated on the top 10 options to tweak before starting to use SQL Developer. I want you to take a quick look at the visual preferences for SQL Developer.
